American artist and filmmaker Doug Aitkens created the ‘Mirage’ house for ‘Desert X’, an outdoor and indoor art exhibition displaying sixteen artworks spreaded along the arid landscape of the Coachella Valley. You might remember Phillip K. Smith mirrored buildings but in this ranch-style suburban American house, no colored LED, no doors or windows, no functional equipments. The least surface is clad in mirror (except the floor), letting the exterior disappear while the interior pull the viewer away into an endless kaleidoscopic play of reflection, allowing him to get another perceptions of the surrounding mountainous desert. Whether the variations of the day, each moment offers a different experience. Therefore a sunny afternoon is divided in many slices of clouds, whereas at night, the lights of the city deploy a vast rhinestone dress.
